Monday 16th August

Yesterday was a fun day! Seeing the sun rise over Niagara Falls was quite breathtaking.

Then up latish (negating a bit the benefit of staying at NF to get at the attractions before the crowds arrive) we had breakfast at an all you can eat for $6.99 place just up the road.  Then found a drugstore to top up on children's Advil painkillers for Jack (he can't swallow the adult ones and they are too horrible to chew!).

Helen and Ellie then headed off for the Maid of the Mist while Jack & I went back to the hotel to pack and check out. (Jack can't get his cast wet and we've both been before)

The Maid of the Mist was great.  Helen loved it and they both got really wet getting up close to the Horseshoe Falls in particular.

We met up, had an icecream in some shade by the river, then Ellie and I walked towards the whirlpool, which I've never seen and quite fancied seeing.  It was farther than we thought so we turned back without reaching it.  Helen and Jack had found a nice shady seat in a park near a shop called the Secret Garden.  Ellie did some shopping there!

We then headed up into the centre of town.  We realised that places like Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe were actually near the other Sheraton and the other Casino - not the Fallsview versions.  this was more Las Vegas or Blackpool with loads of Haunted Houses and Ripley's Believe it or not type places.  We went into a slots arcade where you got tokens, but won tickets - if you won a load of these ticket things spewed out of the machine.  J & E "won" over 400 of them.  There were then machines to count them and you could chose prizes depending on the number you had - 45000 would win you a Wii!

Had a long walk back to the car as we had headed off at a tangent to the the route back to the hotel, but made it and headed off towards Niagara on the Lake, along the river's edge.  Stopped off at the whirlpool and saw the jet boats giving tours down below in the gorge.

Niagara on the lake is very pretty with some quaint shops and fantastically big houses.  Bought a bottle of wine there but failed abysmally on the first rule of chosing wine to drink in a hotel - didn't get a screw top!

On to the hotel - a bit of a disappointment as it's right next the the highway and a service area - but it's OK itself.  Ellie and I had a swim in the pool then got ready to go out.  J & E wanted something from Wendy's across the road so we got them takeaways in the room, then Helen and I ate in the restaurant.

  1. Maid of the Mist would have scared me and Jasper Conran! What if it got too close??? Did you have lifejackets???

  2. Sunday morning - Good to see they still have the blue waterproofs they had all those years ago, and I dare say the falls are just as wet - they certainly look it! Keep on enjoying the wonderful experience.
